There are four, 2-hour sessions covering family communication, self-esteem, puberty changes, and human reproduction. (The first session is just for parents.) Sessions feature games, videos, discussions, handouts, and snacks.

The goal is to give children and their parents an opportunity to share information and family values about sexuality and to help family members feel good about themselves and have fun together.

The program is offered in various Cumberland Co. communities when there is sufficient interest. Parents should call (667-7500) to register for the next available series in your Cumberland County community.

Are you outside of Cumberland County and want to offer this series?

This is an award-winning summer workshop to promote "Girl Power". Each workshop lasts four days and several are offered during July and August. Girls attend from approx. 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. each day.

Girl Powers: “positive qualities, strengths and skills that each girl has or can develop.”

Each program activity has been planned:

  • to increase your Girl Power
  • to help you feel good about yourself
  • to help you learn to deal with pressures that girls have at your age and through your teens
  • to be FUN!

What do girls say?

  • I want to go again
  • It was so-o-o much fun!
  • Make it longer - I don’t want it to be over!

NOTE - We also offer 2-day sessions.

Parent Kits to Borrow and Buy:

1. No Secrets...Just the Facts

Sexuality education KITS at Sexual Health Centre for Cumberland County for Parents of children under 7 years of age

Sometimes it is difficult to talk with your children about sexuality. If you are not sure where to start, this kit will help. It was made for parents of children ages 0 - 6 years and will be helpful with older children as well. Parents can borrow the kit free of charge.

Targeted at rural parents who find it difficult to get to our office, there are 12 kits, each containing Parent things (book, pamphlets) and Kid's things (three books).

The Kit was created in consultation with Cumberland Co. parents and was funded by the Community Health Promotion Fund.

Why do parents need this Kit?

It is important for children to:

  • feel good about being girls or boys
  • develop healthy, positive feelings about their bodies
  • know the correct words for all body parts and functions
  • know the difference between public and private
  • know that sexual feelings are part of being human
  • come to parents for correct information

Ask us about other Parent programs that may be available. Phone (902) 667-7500.

2. The Changing Years:

Sexuality education KITS at Sexual Health Centre for Cumberland County for Parents of 9 - 12 year olds

Parents may borrow these kits which contain books and pamphlets (some for the parents, some for youth). The kits were created with input from parents.

When parents talk with their children about sexuality, it helps keep their children safe and healthy, improve self-esteem and postpone sex.

It’s Time to Talk--Borrow the Kit!
