Valentine Tea....February 4, 2006

Faulkner has agreed again this year to open her beautiful home at the Regent Bed and Breakfast (corner of Regent and E. Victoria St., Amherst) and host a Valentine Tea on Saturday morning, February 4, 2006, 10 a.m. - noon. Consider this your invitation to attend. If you were there last year you’ll remember the tables filled with a wide variety of tempting goodies.

We do not sell tickets to this event. Those who attend may choose to make a donation to help support the programs and services that we offer. In return, they enjoy a lovely tea and receive an income tax receipt.

Sexual and Reproductive Health Awareness Day in Canada:

February 12, 2006

This year’s theme is “It’s Your Choice, Use Your Voice” focusing on opening up the dialogue on sexuality, keeping ourselves informed about sexual health issues, and passing on knowledge to others.

Teachers, Service Providers: Check out www.cfsh.ca for a resource kit. We have some posters at our office as well. SRH Day is organized annually by the Canadian Federation for Sexual Health.

Increasing Visibility and Extending Services

This fiscal year (05-06) we received some extra funding (through the provincial Dept. of Health) designated specifically for increasing visibility and extending services.

This comes at a good time to help us promote our name change and 25th anniversary. Watch for our flyer (with weekend grocery flyers, etc), newspaper ads, new signs in the office windows, and more. The pharmaceutical company, Janssen-Ortho also helped with the cost of the flyer.

With this funding, we were also able to hire Michelle Richard, RN, for one day a week last summer; we’ve had displays at some schools for Parent-Teacher nights and offered the Changing

Years series free of charge last fall ; and we’re in the process of expanding the Worth Waiting (postponing sexual involvement) program to some Grade 6 classes outside of Amherst.

Holiday Catalogue Fundraiser........Thank you!

Thanks to everyone who supported this fundraising event by donating to or buying from the catalogue. We topped $1,950.00!

These dollars help us to maintain our programs and services promoting informed, responsible attitudes toward sexuality.

New in our Lending Library

Sponsored by an unrestricted educational grant from Janssen-Ortho, we are creating a new Menopause Kit (tentative release date is February 28) and adding several new books on the topic to our lending library.

Ethical Sexual Relationships

(From an email from Laura Wershler, Executive Director for Planned Parenthood Alberta)

"I've found the concept of "ethical sexual relationships" to be really useful in the last few years. It can help parents clarify what they want for their kids, and (help) youth to decide what they want for themselves".

Laura quotes SIECUS president Debra Haffner (1998): "We need to acknowledge that the so-called norm of premarital chastity has never applied to the majority of young people. It is time to call for ethical sexual relationships that regardless of the age, marital status, or sexual orientation of the participants, are consensual, non-exploitative, honest, mutually pleasurable, and protected against sexually transmitted (infections) and unintended pregnancies."

What do you think of this concept?
